| A medal or medallion can bring to life a particular event or character from history or it can be regarded as an individual work of art. The commemorative medal may be defined as a medal manufactured to commemorate something of historical interest and importance. Medals have been produced for hundreds of years and are still today seen as one of the most effective and durable ways to commemorate and recognise special and important events. |

Casting and striking are the two primary processes used in the manufacture of medals. The cast medal is produced from hot metal and a mould, while the struck medal is where a metal blank is given an impression from dies into which a design is engraved. The metal blank is then pressed under great force between the dies whereby the image from the dies is transferred to the metal blank.
Copper and lead, and alloys such as bronze, brass, pewter are the most commonly used materials in the manufacture of medals. Medals can be finished in a variety of finishes such as bright gold, silver, copper or the antique finishes which highlight the design detail. Other finishing techniques such as sandblasting can also give contrast to a medal design to bring out intricate detail.
